What is Lost Wax Casting?

Lost wax casting is a jewelry making technique that dates back to 4000-4500 BC with the earliest examples like copper amulets from Pakistan, and artifacts from Bulgaria's Varna Necropolis. 
It allows for the organic, fluid textures and intricate details and shapes that would be impossible to achieve through traditional metal fabrication alone.

Part 1: The Sculptural Beginning

Every journey starts with a block of wax. Unlike mass-market brands, Pei often begins with hand carving. Using heat, dental tools, and files, the design is slowly carved out of the wax. This stage is where the "soul" of the piece is formed; every intentional mark and organic curve is captured here.

Part 2: Creating the "Ghost" Mold & The Local Casting house

Once the wax model is perfected, we hand them over to the local casting house. The original wax piece is attached to a "sprue" (a wax channel/feeder) and placed inside a metal flask. We fill this flask with plaster.
Once the plaster hardens, the flask is placed in a high heat kiln. This is the "lost" phase: the wax completely vaporises, leaving behind a hollow, perfect negative cavity, a ghost of the original sculpture, for liquid meta to be pour inside. 
After the process we have the jewellery in silver. 

Part 3: Hand Finishing at the Bench

The raw metal pieces are liberated from the plaster and returned to our studio. Each piece undergoes a careful finishing process with years of experience: Filling, cutting, sanding, polishing.
